Gaeke Construction Company, acting as construction manager for GISD, has completed the three school projects funded by the 2007 GISD bond issue. All three projects were designed by the Architect firm, SHW Group.
NEW ELEMENTARY ADDITIONS AND THE NEW PRE-K CLASSROOM BUILDING
The first project is the new Elementary additions and the new Pre-K classroom building. The Elementary additions consist of two new 4,000 sq ft classroom additions and some interior renovations to the library and the existing administration area. The Pre-K project was a new 12,000 sq ft classroom facility with supporting administration area and new main entrance. Additional parking and exterior canopies rounded out the exterior construction amenities. The cost for this portion of the bond issue was $3.5 million.
CONVERSION OF THE EXISTING MIDDLE SCHOOL INTO AN INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL FACILITY
The second project was the conversion of the existing middle school into an intermediate school facility. The renovation of the 35,000 sq ft building was extensive. Ceilngs, flooring, paint, gym flooring, bathroom fixtures, electrical and air conditioning systems were all removed and replaced with new products. The kitchen was also completely remodeled with all new equipment. On top of all this work Gaeke Construction leveled one entire classroom wing, lifting the concrete foundation 4 to 6 inches. Amazingly, this work was all completed in only 8 weeks. The cost for this portion of the bond issue was $2.1 million.
THE CROWN JEWEL OF THE BOND ISSUE IS THE NEW HIGH SCHOOL BUILDING
The third project and the Crown Jewel of the bond issue is the new High School building and the conversion of the existing High School into a Middle School facility. The new 170,000 sq ft High School building is absolutely magnificent. New classrooms, administration area, library, kitchen and cafeteria, performing arts, two |
new gyms and athletic training areas are arranged in a contemporary architectural setting. 40 ft ceilings, large open areas for student use and wireless computer technology make for a dynamic learning environment.
The social atmosphere for the students is also enhanced by the addition of student lounges on each floor of the classroom wings. Wide screen high definition televisions which show news events and current student activities are everywhere. The exterior additions feature extensive new parking areas, exterior lighting, drainage and utility improvements. The cost for the new High School facility totaled $25 million.
THE CONVERSION OF THE EXISTING HIGH SCHOOL INTO A MIDDLE SCHOOL FACILITY
The other phase of the high School project was the complete remodel of the existing 60,000 sq ft high school in order for it to function as a new middle school facility. Likewise the existing building was completely renovated to include new paint, flooring, fire sprinkler system, asbestos removal, roofing, electrical, plumbing and air conditioning systems. This renovation was also completed in a mere 8 weeks. Again, an amazing feat considering the magnitude and scope of the project. This cost for this portion of the bond issue was $1 million.
